Position Statement

ADMSEP Position Statement on Recruitment

  INTRODUCTION

 TOP
 INTRODUCTION

The Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry is an organization dedicated to championing excellence in medical student education and to providing support, guidance, and resources to medical students and to psychiatric educators. ADMSEP is committed to collaborating with its sister organizations in promoting the field of psychiatry throughout the medical profession. Attracting talented students is essential to the future of the discipline and is a responsibility shared by all faculty members of departments of psychiatry. Excellent teaching is one of the most controllable factors in a student’s decision to enter psychiatry. Strong departmental support for education and good faculty morale are essential to this mission. Medical student educators also consider it their responsibility to project a positive image of psychiatry as well as to identify, encourage, and provide resources to students interested in a career in psychiatry. For students who indicate a preference for medical disciplines other than psychiatry, ADMSEP members will foster and encourage the development of psychiatric knowledge and skills necessary for successful practice. Although ADMSEP members believe our primary responsibility is to teach principles of good psychiatric care to all future physicians, we recognize the importance of identifying, nurturing, and, if possible, increasing the number of talented students choosing a career in psychiatry.
